Chapter 1 Study Questions

  1. Extinction is natural and no species persists forever. This statement is true, but is it a reason to not protect biodiversity? Formulate your answer as if you were responding to a question from a reporter.
  2. European conservation biologists placed more emphasis on land and species management than their U.S. colleagues, at least in the past. How would you explain the origin of these differences?
  3. How can precautionary approaches be better integrated in policy affecting biodiversity? Are there necessarily wholly beneficial effects of a precautionary approach, or might there be cases where a precautionary approach may not be the best choice?
